2012 National Convention Bids
In 2010, members of Section 1, Section 2, and Section 4 began preparing bids to bring the 2012 National Convention to Region X. It came around the 2009 Region X Conference, when the Region X Director encouraged multiple bids to improve Region X's chances of hosting the convention. After all, one of the bids could have failed. At the conference, Sections 1 and 2 presented an Orange County/Anaheim (OC) bid whereas Section 4 had two more competing bids for Oakland and San Francisco (SF). Later in 2010, a third bid for San Jose came about.
Eventually, at Gamma Beta's 2010 Fall Fellowship, less than two months before the National Convention, two of the three Section 4 bids were advised to shut down. The rationale was that having three bids coming from one section without having an active base supporting any one of them was destined for failure. Only San Francisco remained. The heads of the three Section 4 bids backed off, and a few people took charge of the remaining San Francisco bid. The bid team did roughly four months worth of work in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, eventually cranking out a fairly strong bid to compete with the Anaheim team's consistently strong efforts.
At the 2010 National Convention, the competition between the SF bid and OC bid was tough. Ultimately, San Francisco received the Time & Place Reference Committee's recommendation, but the Orange County bid won out on the legislative floor in a 218-211 vote. Gerald Schroeder remarked that he had never seen a vote so close in the thirty years he had been watching, and it was the narrowest victory for a convention bid history.
