Mu Zeta is the San Francisco State University chapter of Alpha Phi Omega.

History

The following is a history of Mu Zeta as derived from its historians.[1]

Beginnings

Mu Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega at San Francisco State University, first began as a chapter at what was then called San Francisco State College back in 1956. In Fall 1956, 40 members were part of the Chartering Group. All of the members were male, and it wasn’t until 1976 when females were admitted to the fraternity.

On November 29, Mr. C. J. Carlson, presented the Alpha Phi Omega charter to Mr. Charles Mahnken, President of the Mu Zeta Chapter at San Francisco State College. This would signify the birth of the Mu Zeta as an active chapter upon its inception into the brotherhood of Alpha Phi Omega. Mr. Carlson, was appointed by then Alpha Phi Omega National President William Roth.

In Spring 1957, Kenneth K. Bechtel, President of the Boy Scouts of America, was named the pledge class namesake. He was also a member of the pledge class that included 6 total initiates.

By 1958, some ongoing activities for the chapter included sponsoring the car pool bulletin board at the beginning of each semester, taking care of the check room at all dances and being responsible for the care of “Albert” the school’s alligator mascot, during the Homecoming game.

The Fall 1958 term would be the last recorded pledge class for the young chapter as a ban was imposed on all fraternities and sororities at San Francisco State College effective December 15, 1960. As a result, Mu Zeta Chapter became inactive. It wouldn’t be until over two decades later when Mu Zeta would resurface as a newly rechartered chapter of Alpha Phi Omega.

Rechartering

Finally, on April 26, 1985, Mu Zeta took its biggest step and was finally recognized as a brand new chapter. It had been granted active status by the National Office of Alpha Phi Omega, during the Rechartering Ceremony held in the Student Union Basement rooms A-E, at 7:00pm on the campus of San Francisco State University. Among those in attendance was National President Earle M. Herbert who presented the recharter to Mu Zeta. He performed the ritual along with Region X Representative, John Trunick III, and Section 4 Chairperson Andrea Levy. The ceremonial tablecloth was donated that evening by Mu Zeta’s big brother chapter, Alpha Alpha Xi, which was also instrumental in paying for the chapter’s National Office registration fees. The remaining members of the ritual team were composed of brothers from the Stockton chapter.

Today

The chapter at San Francisco State University has been committed to providing service to humanity for the past two decades and will be coming up on the chapter’s 25th anniversary in 2010.
