ExComm Crash Course is a big training session to educate people about the Executive Committee before elections. All Executive Committee officers--past and present--are encouraged to attend and share their knowledge with election candidates or any other active who simply wants to learn about the chapter. Anyone is free to come and ask questions, even if they are not running for a position. However, the event is most useful to candidates for office, so it is best to schedule this event in advance to allow as many officers and advisors as possible to attend. This event requires good facilitation skills to be useful. All attendees should be encouraged to participate, and discussion should not be dominated by only a few individuals.

The first ExComm Crash Course focused on several topics:

  • Historical, expected, required and hopeful duties of each position.
  • Chapter documents (e.g. bylaws, constitution, risk management policy)
  • How to properly preserve records for the chapter on paper and on Iota Phi Wiki.
  • How to create a budget and how allocations and reimbursements work (Executive Committee provided sample budgets for each position)
  • How to use Executive Committee features on the website (e.g. creating events on the calendar, tracking, etc.)

Additionally, people were encouraged to sign up and list other potential discussion topics and request any old documents or scrapbooks from the storage unit for historical reference.

History

The original idea for the ExComm Crash Course was created Ashish Bhatt and named by Derek Ng. The two co-hosted the first event toward the end of the Fall 2009 term. An ExComm Crash Course has been hosted every term since then. The event's structure occasionally changes, but the purpose has remained the same.
