Awards
Chapter Awards
Iota Phi has many awards to recognize Brothers' various achievements. Some awards are just for fun, such as pledge class superlatives, whereas others like the DSK or BASOOS are much more serious.
Highest Awards
These awards are considered to be the highest that Iota Phi has to offer to individuals in descending order:
Chapter Distinguished Service Key
The DSK or Distinguished Service Key is the highest award given by the chapter to any one individual for service rendered to the chapter that has gone far and above the call of duty. There is no limit on how many people can recieve the DSK per term, only that the recipient must gain a 3/4 vote of the membership.
For a list of previous recipients, see Chapter Distinguished Service Key.
BASOOS
The BASOOS aka The Benevolent and Spirited Order of Oil and Sand, is the second highest honor offered in Iota Phi after the DSK. It was created and given to people in the chapter who have shown excellent spirit and passion for the chapter. It is an award that is passed from one recipient to the next when the holder feels someone is deserving (usually when someone goes above and beyond their call of duty as an officer or as an active).
For more information about the BASOOS and a list of previous recipients, see BASOOS.
LFS Awards
LFS (Leadership, Friendship, and Service) Awards are three honors given to active members of the Fraternity each term through vote. The recipient of each has during the given term exemplified the given quality, above and beyond their call of duty.
For a list of previous recipients, see LFS Awards.
Friendship Awards
Iota Phi has several friendship-related awards. They are as follows:
Fellow Dog
The Fellow Dog was created Toy term as the fellowship counter-part to the Service Cow. It is the award given to the person who attended the most fellowships in the term. It is passed from previous recipient to the new and with each new recipient a dog tag is added with their name.
For a list of previous recipients, see Fellow Dog.
Fellow Puppy
Awarded to the pledge who attended the most fellowships in the term. Created during Mayen term, the puppy is passed from the previous recipient to the new and with each new recipient a dog tag is added with their name. Its active counterpart is the Fellow Dog.
For a list of previous recipients, see Fellow Puppy.
Fellow Sheep
Passed down from Fellowship VP to Fellowship VP, the fellowsheep stand as a most honored and revered tradition of Iota Phi. They can be divided into the Sheep of Joy and Happiness, and the Cursed Sheep.
For more information, see Fellowsheep.
Service Awards
Iota Phi has many service-related awards. They are as follows:
Fragrant Thorn
The Fragrant Thorn is awarded to the active Brother who completes the most service projects in a given term.
For a list of previous recipients, see Fragrant Thorn.
Golden Slipper
Literally a golden slipper, this award is passed down every term to the pledge with the most service hours of their pledge class. This award was created by Debbie Sloane, the founder of Loose Family.
For a list of previous recipients, see Golden Slipper
Service Cow
Awarded to the active that completes the most service hours in a given term. It wears dog tags from its previous owners. The Service Cow's name is Sid. Sid the Service Cow.
For a list of previous recipients, see Service Cow.
Silver Slipper
Passed down every term to the pledge who came close to winning the Golden Slipper, if there is one. This award was created by Angela J Cheng and Lesley Mayson.
For a list of previous recipients, see Silver Slipper.
Sturdy Oak
Awarded to actives who fulfill twice the service requirement (twice hours, twice projects) receive this award for their dedication to service. For the pledge counterpart, see Vigorous Sapling.
Vigorous Sapling
The Vigorous Sapling award is given to pledges who go above and beyond their service requirement by fulfilling at least double the requirement (double hours, double projects). This honor was created by Chris Takemori and Michelle Jaromay, Service Vice Presidents of Hancock term. The SVPs, along with Alice Cheng, thought it'd be funny to make it sound kind of like a pledge version of the Sturdy Oak award, so what would be a good younger sounding version of Sturdy Oak? VIGOROUS SAPLING!
Its active counterpart is the Sturdy Oak.
Miscellaneous Awards
Active of the Week
Active of the Week is an award administered by the Membership Vice Presidents on a weekly basis to an active who represents any of Iota Phi's principles. Many similar awards have been offered in the past, including Friend of the Week, which was given only once during Spring 2002, Hsiung Term to Tina Pham. The first known use of Active of the Week was during Fall 2003, Hancock Term when it was created by Ian Rojas and Stephanie Liu. The next prominent version of this award was the Awesome Active Award.
See Active of the Week.
Clark Kent
The Clark Kent Award is presented to a Brother who had become very active in the fraternity after a period of inactivity. This award is presented with the Historians' discretion.
For a list of previous recipients, see Clark Kent.
CoHo Whore
Awarded to one active and one pledge who spend the most hours at the Coffee House (aka CoHo) in the Memorial Union on campus.
For a list of previous recipients, see CoHo Whore.
IC Award
The IC Award, formerly known as the IC Sweetie, is given to active members who attend events at 4 (or more) chapters outside of Iota Phi. The award was created in Fall 2003, Hancock Term, by Stephanie Liu. The award was renamed because when it was first created, the pin in mind was the Sweetheart Pin; until Stephanie found out that each pin would be about $65 each. So it was changed to the Key Pin, but the name is still thrown around sometimes.
Last One Standing
An award given to the last person standing at the end of an Assassins game. Takes a lot of skill, deception, aggression and of course, luck. Lots of it.
See Last One Standing.
Picture Whore
This Award is divided into three categories, Picture Whore Type A, Picture Whore Type B, and Picture Whore Type AB. Type A is for actives who stand behind the lens and captures every memory the term has to offer. Type B is for actives who just cant seem to avoid the camera. Type AB is for the rare actives who do both. This award is given to two actives each term, one old and one newly crossed.
For a list of previous recipients, see Picture Whore Type A, Picture Whore Type B, and Picture Whore Type AB.
Pledge Class Superlatives
During each banquet, Pledge Parents would typically hand out awards much like high school senior superlatives to the newly-activated pledge class. The recipients of these just-for-fun awards are voted on by the pledge class prior to the banquet. The superlatives are not always the same, but many have been given out in the past. They are given usually either to one individual, or to both a boy and a girl.
See Pledge Class Superlatives.
Pledge LFS Awards
The counterpart to LFS Awards, the Pledge LFS Awards are given to pledges each term through a vote. The recipient of each--Leadership, Friendship, and Service--has during the given term exemplified the given quality above and beyond their call of duty.
For a list of previous recipients, see Pledge LFS Awards.
Out of Use
Many awards have gone in and out of use over the years. Here is a list of awards that are no longer given out:
Something About Someone
Passed down by the previous recipient to someone who has that special something that makes them special, but they just can't describe.
For a list of previous recipients, see Something About Someone.
Susie Sunshine
Awarded by Historians to that person that brightens up the day.
For a list of previous recipients, see Susie Sunshine.
