Close Boogers Family, more commonly known as Close Family, was founded by Elizabeth Tom. Their family color is green and they are known for being an especially (pardon the pun) close family. Close has traditions all its own but none have reached the light of day to tell about them. The majority of Close family is related to Minh Tran with the exceptions of Cindy's Line and Will Warriner's line.
Mascot
As of Fall 2009, Close Family has a mascot: Snotty, the Green Monkey. Commissioned by Ashish Bhatt, Leslie Cheng designed and created this monkey. Having a knack for crafts, Leslie somehow turned a simple request for a "green monkey" into a towering six-foot cotton-stuffed behemoth. Snotty typically sports a stunning Close Family t-shirt. Later, in Fall 2010, Dennis Wong appointed Leslie to make a live-action monkey suit for Family Revealing. The suit was first worn by Ashish Bhatt, much to his chagrin, then by Ryan Soo in Spring 2011, and then by Henry Huang Fall 2011.
Snotty's name comes from Close Family's actual name, Close Boogers. Incidentally, the idea of a green monkey being Close's mascot originated as a joke. At the time, some actives would stress the difficulties of being a Family Chair and lack of appreciation for them. Eventually, a couple of other actives joked, "A monkey could do that job!" Hearing the catch-phrase, Ashish Bhatt made it the motto for his reign as Head Family Chair as a funny way of de-stigmatizing the job.
Snotty typically makes appearances only during major family events during the term.
Family Chairs
Close Family has become arguably the most organized family. This can be explained by its very efficient use of the committee system for Family Chairs. Unlike other families that select Family Chairs for specific days or assign duties after enough Family Chairs have been selected, Close takes volunteers for specific positions. Usually, one experienced chair stays on the team and an inexperienced member will join to take over the task for the following term. Still, being a capable Family Chair is entirely doable even with very little experience as long as people are willing to seek out help and take advice.
- Head Chair: The Head Chair oversees everything that must be prepared for family activities, monitors other Family Chairs, reserves locations for all activities, and often makes executive decisions about what the family should do if a snap decision must be made. However, Close generally prefers to choose activities and decide what to spend money on by taking informal votes from the family. Since Spring 2009, Close Family Head Chairs decided that the job would be much easier to split between two people. However, it has most typically been done by one person.
- Accounting/Finance Chair: The Accounting or Finance Chair prepares a budget constrained by what is collected from Family dues. The budget is often based on the previous term's spending. The chair is responsible for reimbursing any other chairs that spend approved money on family-related activities, preparing a financial spreadsheet for the budget and expenditures made, and being at events to pay for whatever is necessary.
- Supplies Chair: The Supplies Chair is responsible for driving to various stores to purchase all the necessary Family items beforehand. Close Family Supplies Chairs typically venture out to purchase items well in advance of when they are needed so they can see if any anticipated purchases need to be replaced because they are unavailable, or in case the realize they might need something later. Having a car, preferably a large one, is highly recommended for this position.
- Ritual Chair: The Ritual Chair handles any and all rituals performed by and for Close Family. Since family rituals are highly secretive, consult Close Family actives for more information if and only if you too are a Close Family active. But for the most part, rituals are an extremely don't ask, don't tell subject.
- Decorations Chair: The Decorations Chair is typically the host of all family-related preparation. They offer up their apartment or house to family members to decorate or work on whatever they need to work on. They often occasionally help in decorating things.
- Transportation Chair: The Transportation Chair is responsible for arranging rides lists so pledges can get around to family events.
- Revealing Chair: The Revealing Chair handles anything that needs to be done for the first important family day of each term. This position was an innovation thought up by Ashish Bhatt after he realized it would be more efficient and fun for everyone if these responsibilities were moved away from the Head Chair to a new chair position. It was first implemented by Dennis Wong.
