This honor was created by Chris Takemori and Michelle Jaromay, Service Vice Presidents of Hancock term. The SVPs, along with Alice Cheng, thought it'd be funny to make it sound kind of like a pledge version of the Sturdy Oak award, so what would be a good younger sounding version of Sturdy Oak? The first recipients of the Vigorous Sampling actually received a small potted plant; the chapter transitioned to using a pin as the Vigorous Sapling became a tradition.
Its active counterpart is the Sturdy Oak.
