Every pledge gets a big bro. A big bro is like a mentor, a teacher, and a friend, someone who helps that pledge through the pledging process. Current active members of the chapter are assigned a lil bro from the pledge class, based upon their interests, personalities, etc. Pairings are determined by the pledge parents and BB/LB chairs. It is generally the big bro's goal and responsibility to ensure that their lil bro finishes their requirements and crosses.
Even after the lil bro crosses and becomes an active member, the pair is still retained, even if the responsibilities of the big bro no longer involve helping with requirements. When a lil bro gets a lil bro of their own, that adds to the big bro's family line.
Note: Because the term "Brother" is gender-neutral at Iota Phi, the same goes for "big bro." A big bro can be either a boy or a girl.
