About St. John's: --from website St. John's Shelter for Women and Children was formed more than 22 years ago as a non-profit 501(c)3. Its mission is to provide homeless and displaced women and children 24-hour shelter and supportive services to enable their transition from crisis to self-sufficiency. In an atmosphere that respects diversity and affirms the dignity of each individual, case managers and trained counselors meet with each client to assess strengths and needs and begin to identify recurring obstacles, especially employment and housing. Short and long-term goals leading to permanent stability are addressed in individualized case plans that are monitored throughout their 60-day stay.
St. John's collaborates with the County and other local agencies to serve its clients. The Effort provides the Shelter with a mental health counselor, an alcohol/drug abuse counselor, and a part-time psychiatrist to work with its clients. Sacramento Self-Help Housing works with the Shelter clients to help them gain access to affordable rentals, and assists them in applying for other housing programs.
The Shelter focuses a great deal of effort on those most traumatized by homelessness -- the children. Its Children's Program has dedicated staff and volunteers who provide classes, workshops, and activities to enable the children to learn positive behavior in a warm, loving and judgment-free environment.
