Viet Crew
Viet Crew
The Viet Crew, also known as Vietnam Crew, is a Vietnamese food adventure group and is the most legendary crew in Iota Phi. Viet Crew is NOT exclusive to only people who are Vietnamese. The group is made up of both pledges and active members who just can't get enough of the Vietnamese culture into their lives and just love everything about it. Viet Crew is the group that every pledge wants to join when they first initiate in Alpha Phi Omega because our main purpose is to educate and expose people to great Vietnamese cuisine and our group accomplishes this through our (soon-to-be) food adventures in "Little Saigon" Sacramento, where we search for the best of the best in Vietnamese food for the main goal of achieving Vietnamese "nirvana". Our criticism and endorsement of certain aspects of the Vietnamese culture is what makes this group the best hangout crew in the chapter. Although there are certain aspects of the Vietnamese culture that we are not so particularly fond of such as the stereotypical strictness of our parents, pressure to become the doc-tuh, parents embarrassing us in public, or just the feminine language itself, the Viet Crew will always truly be proud of one of the derpiest type of people: Vietnamese!!!
History and Origin
One afternoon in the breezy season of Fall 2012, Brother Tony Phan and Pledge Rachel Tran were having a rather enlightening discourse on a variety of topics ranging from San Jose, to turtles, to bánh xèo. Other topics in this odd discussion included Vietnamese stereotypes, the Vietnamese language, and of course last but not least, Vietnam. Brother Tony and Pledge Rachel then pondered on the idea of starting a crew together that would help gather both Brothers and Pledges in the chapter whom were of Vietnamese descent or those who appreciated Vietnamese culture in order to form a small brotherhood together to share our common love for Vietnam. They then decided to call this brotherhood the Viet Crew, also known informally as the Vietnamese Mafia. From conversations that went from ducks to turtles to mychonny, the Viet Crew was born. From then on the Viet Crew’s purpose shall be to further embrace the Vietnamese heritage through the appreciation of Vietnamese cuisine, Vietnamese culture, the Vietnamese language, and the reinforcement and the breaking of Vietnamese stereotypes. From high expectation fathers, nagging mothers, to horrible Vietnamese driving, the Viet Crew proudly accepts the Vietnamese identity. The members of Viet Crew consist of some of the most oddest, clumsiest, and most awkwardly awesome people you will ever meet. The only requirement to be an honorary member of the Viet Crew is that you must appreciate nước mắm, enjoy any aspect of the Vietnamese culture, and you must be legen — wait for it...dary.
