One afternoon in the breezy season of Fall 2012, Brother Tony Phan and Pledge Rachel Tran were having a rather enlightening discourse on a variety of topics ranging form San Jose, to turtles, to Banh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe). Other topics in this exquisite discussion included Vietnamese stereotypes, the Vietnamese language, and of course Vietnam. Brother Tony and Pledge Rachel then pondered on the idea of starting a crew together that would help gather Brothers and Pledges in the chapter whom were of Vietnamese descent in order to form a small brotherhood together. They then decided to call this brotherhood the Viet Crew. From ducks to turtles, the Viet Crew was born. From then on the Viet Crew’s purpose shall be to further embrace the Vietnamese heritage through the experience of appreciating Vietnamese cuisine, Vietnamese culture, the Vietnamese language, and through the reinforcement OR the breaking of Vietnamese stereotypes. Nagging Vietnamese fathers to horrible Vietnamese mother drivers, Viet Crew proudly accepts the Vietnamese identity. The members of Viet Crew consist of some of the most odd, clumsiest, and most awkward people you will ever meet. The only requirement to be an honorary member of the Viet Crew is to be Vietnamese heritage and to be legen — wait for it...dary.

The Viet Crew, also known as the Vietnamese Mafia, is the most legendary crew in Iota Phi. The group is made up of pledges and active members who just love everything Vietnamese and can't get enough of it. Viet Crew is the group that every pledge wants to join as our adventures include making trips to Sacramento for delicious Vietnamese food. Our criticisms and endorsements of certain aspects of the Vietnamese culture is what makes this group the best ethnic specific "fun" group in the chapter. Although there are certain aspects of the Vietnamese culture that we are not so fond of such as the strictness of parents, the embarrassment that our parents may lay on to us whenever out in public, or phrases in the Vietnamese language that are just plain hilarious, Viet Crew will always truly be proud to be Vietnamese.

History and Origin

The only requirement to be an honorary member of the Viet Crew is to love anything Vietnamese and to be legen — wait for it...dary.
