The 2004 National Convention took place in Denver, Colorado. It was where IPhi invasion of the midwest and APO at large!
There are definitely a few things worth mentioning about that Nationals. First, the chapter started fundraising for the trip about 1 year before during Hancock Term. During this term, Aaron Lipton was Fundraising Chair. The next term, Toy term, Marissa Kubo and Alice Cheng were the Treasurers and they coordinated the chapter's efforts in raising money for the trip. After that, Nancy Wong and Stephanie Lee were the Treasurers of West term and they, too, were instrumental in fundraising efforts. Finally, Aaron Lipton and Nancy Wong were the main planners of Iota Phi's trip itinerary and living arrangements there.
The conference took place at the Adams Mark Hotel in Denver, and we rented 6 rooms to stay in. We decided that the it'd be the most price efficient for everyone to take the train from California to Denver.
Leaving on Christmas Day 2004, many of us took the train out of Emeryville and Sacramento. Some people from Gamma Beta and one member from Zeta Omicron joined our ride. The train ride took about 33 or so hours to get from California to Denver, and we entertained ourselves on the ride by eating, sleeping, reading, knitting, chatting, playing card games or other games, watching movies and playing computer games. One memorable thing is definitely the fact that there was only one outlet to be found on our cart, and us calling ahead to Sacramento for Rickee Nguyen to bring a power strip so we can plug in more computers. Sadly enough, this added to the extreme hotness we felt in the last cart (as some would say, we were being baked alive!)
We arrived in Denver on December 26 at about 7pm. We decided to ride the 16th Street Mall Shuttle to the hotel and drop off our things before we had some REAL food. People then went to places like Paramount Cafe and Taco Bell to eat.
The next few days were full of things like the Fellowship Banquet, Awards Banquet, Workshops, legislative meetings, meeting people from all over the country who were also in Alpha Phi Omega, buying things from the National Office's store, and exploring Denver.
A highlight of the trip was definitely having 32 of us from Iota Phi there and having a high attendance count from Region X overall. We were known as that "big Asian chapter" and we even won the National Man-mile award! Another highlight was our rollcall that we did during the Fellowship Banquet...cuz we all know that when IPHI gets its service on we drop it like it's hot!!
The train ride back was much longer (more like 37+ hours) and there were delays caused by snow. We definitely had a few snowball fights though! We celebrated New Years while leaving Salt Lake City, Utah and arrived back in California at about 9:00pm or so.
(I'd add more but I'm a little tired..please feel free to revise!)
