RogerClark: Plege Class Namesake Update

Namesake refers to a person for whom a pledge class is named after. Being a namesake is among the highest honors that the National Office or a chapter can bestow upon an individual. Note that a chosen namesake does not necessarily have to be a member of the voting chapter, nor even a member of Alpha Phi Omega. Whereas Iota Phi refers to its pledge classes by their namesake, other chapters may refer to their pledge classes in distinct ways, such as Gamma Gamma, where pledge classes are referred to by the namesake's initials (e.g. "WK" for Wilfred Krenek, or "JAM" for Jack A. McKenzie). Some chapters do not use namesakes at all, and refer to their pledge classes in the order they pledge, using Greek letters (the first class would be Alpha, the second Beta, and so on, just as chapters are named).

Selection
In the Fall, the pledge class namesake is chosen by the National Office, and Iota Phi will name that pledge class after the national namesake. In the Spring, each chapter is free to choose their own namesake, so every chapter's Spring namesake will be different. At Iota Phi, it is among the Pledge Parents' duties to submit a proposal for a namesake for the Spring pledge class; however, ultimate authority in the decision rests with the chapter, and the Spring namesake is chosen via voting by the chapter. Generally, the pledge parent's recommendation is followed by the chapter, however.

For a list of Fall class namesakes, see the national site.
:Yes, welcome Roger Clark! Your information has been wonderfully helpful! There's a section that we may need your help with. It's the "wanted" page, a list of orphan links that have two or more occurrences. Me and some other people (like Aaron Lipton) were working on the list, but there are people on the list now that we may not know who they are, what positions they've held, etc. If you can, please help us out with it! The way I get there is by typing "to do" in the search field, then looking for it. That will route you to the "wanted" page. You can also get there by cliking the "to do" link on the main page. Thanks a lot! Sabellachan 10:49, 8 Jul 2005 (PDT)
Hi Roger... I'm really sorry for the late response, but I just heard word that the Alumni BBQ will be at Mace Ranch Park. 3030 Loyola Street in Davis. Again, it's this Saturday, the 20th from 11am-3pm. Alumni do not need to bring anything, but a headcount to the Alumni Chair, Carrie Gringas (gimp221@yahoo.com), will be help with preparations. I know if I was around you guys a lot my stories of "This is the way things were..." would eventually turn into "This is the way you should do ..." and then I would be one of those Alumni that need to disappear from APhiO for a few years. If you want to hang, I will be at the "Twilight Walk for Wishes" project on May 21.
When and where is the alumni picnic? --RogerClark

The Alumni BBQ is on the same day as the Twilight Walk for Wishes, actually. Saturday, May 21st from 11am-3pm. The location will probably be in a park, but the exact location is TBA as the date draws nearer. I'll keep you updated when I find out anything. Let other IPhi Alumni know if you could. =D --Jackson Thach

No! Alumni BBQ is Saturday, May 20th (12pm)!! =) So you can hang out with cool alumni AND still do service on Sunday! WOOT! SERVICE!!! -- Carol Shu

I plan on telling all the alumni I know (some stretching back to the late 70's), the issue is that I need all the info I can get. Sending out the info with "Some park in Davis" won't help bring them in. The other question I would be "Do we need to bring anything?" --Roger Clark

RogerClark: fleshed out a little more

Reference Committees are found most commonly at National Conventions. Their purpose is to sift through all the proposed legislation and recommend refined versions to the floor during the Legislative Session.

There are roughly 15 committees, with some being created or disbanded from convention to convention depending upon the needs of the convention and the nature of the proposed legislation. The reference committees are determined by the National President.

While the reference committees are meant to distill all of the various proposals and reach a consensus, the delegates on the floor are by no means obligated to follow their recommendations.

Here is a listing to the committees more commonly used.
Leadership Development
Their focus is on proposals related to leadership programs such as CLW and other similar programs.
Alumni Relations
Focus is on finding ways to strenghten the alumni community and utilize their resources for the overall good of the fraternity.
Awards & Appreciation
This committee focuses on sorting through all the national awards that are to be presented at the national convention.
Chapter Operations
Sets requirements for the chapters to meet and other chapter related items.
Finance & Operations
Money, how to get it and what to do with it. Fees to Nationals is discussed here.
International Relations
How to expands APhiO beyond the USA and the Phillipines.
Long Range Planning
Mainly deals with ways to craft the Fraternity to set and meet long term goals.
National Organization I
Overall National Organization legislation.
National Organization II
Typically dealing with National Board organization and responsibilities.
Membership & Extension
Legislation on how to expand and retain members. Particularly focused on petitioning chapter requirements.
Nominating
This committee decides who to nominate for the national board positions. While they do recommend a group of candidates, it is common for additional people to be nominated on the floor and to be elcted to office despite the committee's recommendations.
Rituals & Traditions
Thier focus in on dealing with legislation about changes to the various ceremonies and traditions of the Fraternity. They get the Toast Song issue, and other things.
Rules & Credentials
This group has the most arduous task, they verify delegates with questionable credentials, as well as go over all the other committees paperwork to ensure that it is in order to be presented to the floor. They work late, usually force at least one reference committee back to rewrite their proposals.
Time & Place
This group weighs the requirements of holding a national convention aalong with the proposals from bid cities and recommends a site.
Scouting and Youth Services
Sets how the fraternity associates with various youth organizations.
Service & Communications
Primarily determines National Service Week themes for the next two years, and some PR things.

RogerClark: minor grammar

These are the two people chosen to represent the chapter at the National Convention and Regional Conference. These people are tasked with voting in the chapters best interest to help form national and regional policy. If the chapter is together, they vote on it and submit it well abead of time. If not, some poor active gets conscripted into being it upon arrival at the convention.

National Convention
The big covention every 2 years. Technically, each chapter only needs to send a voting representative (preferrably 2) to the National Convention to vote on national issues.
Reference Committees
There are roughly 15 reference committees that hold meetings during the first two days of the convention. Each committee needs one representative from each Region. So there is a pretty good chance a delegate will wind up on a committee. These committees will sift through the various pieces of legislation and craft them for the legislative session to vote on.
Pros
*You can see how policy is formed and condensed to general consumption.
*You can meet some cool people
*If you are on the right committee you get to do cool things like help suggest where the next convention should be
Cons
*If you are on the wrong committee you can be stuck helping decide things that not many people really care about and are horribly detailed and inane, yet do serve a purpose.
*You won't get to see much else of the convention since you will be in committee the first 2 days, and the legislative session the last 2 days of a 4 day conference.
*If there are some disputes, you may not get much sleep either.

Legislative Session
The last 2 days of the conference where all the voting gets done. The generally can last a long time, and the conference will not end until it has voted on everything. It is rather exclusive since only voting delegates, national officers, regional directors, conference chairs, and alumni delegates are allowed on the floor. Everyone else gets to sit in the observation area. Parliamentary Procedure runs the session, so know it, or get ready for a crash course in it.
Pros
*You get to vote on national policy, elect the national officers, and choose where the next convention will be.
*You get to learn parliamentary procedure very, Very, VERY well.
*You get to pass notes, just like in grade school, but you won't get in trouble with the teacher.
*Since breaks are few and far between, non-voting delegates from your chapter will send food out to you on the floor.
*Since breaks are few and far between, non-voting delegates from your chapter will find interesting ways to smuggle refreshments out to you on the floor.
Cons
*Sleep? what's that?
*Lots on inane debate.
*You get to learn parliamentary procedure very, Very, VERY well.
*Some of those very funny moments are only hilarious because of severe sleep deprivation.
Defining Moments
*Your first amendment to an amendment. They won't let it get any further than that.
*When the chairs finally get tired of all the crap and start shutting down people at the microphones.
*Interesting Debates: These typically happen every conference over some of the thornier issues in the fraternity. Be prepared to hear the word Tradition a lot and sometimes in very imaginative ways.
**The during the motion to get rid of the Gentleman's Agreement
**The the motion to drop any affiliation with the Boy Scouts.
**The motion to change the Toast Song.
*The person who tries to amend the recommendation on where the next national convention will be from the recommended city to their preferred city.
Region Meeting
*After the National business is finished, Regions have seperate meetings to conduct their own business. Genreally, this is limited to three things:
**People making announcements.
**Voting on who the Region Chair will be for the next two years.
**Voting on the host of the next Region Conference (and sometimes the dates).
Regional Conference
Regional Conferences have pretty short legislative sessions primarily due to the small number of delegates, and the relatively small number of issues needing to be dealt with on the regional level.
