|Description=This is a three night trip to Tahoe over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The first full day is usually spent on the slopes, while the second full day is spent up in Reno, mostly likely eating lobsters. Usually one giant cabin (approximately 5000 square feet) is rented out for everyone.
|Objective=A weekend getaway for the chapter. It is also an exceptional way for brothers to bond in a more intimate and exciting setting.

- games, dvds, etc for entertainment throughout the weekend

|step1=Friday: Pack and leave Davis. People leave at varying times due to school and work.

|exissues=The issue of distance and money are two of the most important factors in the planning of Winter Retreat. Many drivers do not want to drive in snowy conditions, nor can their cars handle it. In addition, sometimes there are unforeseen problems, such as a storm hitting during the three-day weekend. Money is no doubt one of the biggest issues. The trip occurs right after the holiday season, and many people are strapped for funds, which could result in a low turn-out rate. Renting a cabin for potentially that many people is quite steep and in order for the chapter not to lose money, the more people who go, the easier it is for the chapter to break even. When factoring in the additional cost of food and gas, sometimes it is quite difficult to muster up enough people to attend.
|rmissues=Because the event takes place outside of Davis, many people think it is okay to break risk management. However, since retreat is an Alpha Phi Omega sponsored event, risk management does apply. Brothers who plan on attending must understand this before they sign-up to go.

Winter Retreat, sometimes referred to as a [[Inside Jokes|hellacious meatgrinder]] to chair, is perhaps the biggest fellowship event of the year; generally down over MLK Jr. weekend, it is three nights up in Tahoe, in anywhere from two to four cabins. Attendance, over the years, has ranged between 70 and 100 members. members tend to spend a day on the slopes, and then are too tired to do much else. Buffets are attacked in tahoe as well.

==Program Changes==
*Removed Pledge Group Fellowship and Service projects. In their place was a "[[Chandler's Challenge]]" requirement, which was the namesake's challenge to each pledge class to create a project to help youth. One side-effect of this was a lower number of service projects on the calendar for the term.
*Four [[Pledge Trainers]] were put in charge of each group. This is an unprecedented high, as pledge groups were previously led by at most three trainers.
*Seven [[Big Bro/Little Bro Chairs]] were appointed as opposed to the typical six. This had not been done since [[Jaromay Class|Jaromay Term]].
*Recording Secretaries began sending out semiweekly e-mail newsletters every Tuesday and Thursday to reduce e-mail spam to the chapter. These semiweekly e-mail newsletters typically include updates and announcements from ExComm officers and Chairs.
*Recording Secretaries also began a dare penalty for ExComm officers who turned in their powerpoint agenda slides late. The dares are selected by Recording Secretaries from submissions made by the Chapter, and announced at the meetings.
*This is the first term for which the Wiki was taken down a week before Family Revealing. Prior to this, only family pages were made invisible.
*Whereas during [[Krenek Class|Krenek Term]] the chapter paid for registration of all delegates and all hotel fees for Nationals, this term faced limitations. The chapter paid for the voting delegates' registration and hotel fees, and had other delegates share the room with the voting delegates while splitting the remainder of the cost. Non-voting delegates would be reimbursed for the conference registration fee as well. The lack of hotel coverage was due to large losses incurred during the [[Region X Conference (2009)|2009 Region X Conference]] and [[Winter Retreat]] during [[McKenzie Class|McKenzie Term]].
**There are differing opinions as to why hotel coverage was not offered. One reason being that hotels/airfare are not a direct part of obtaining leadership experience and thus should not be covered. Another reason is the belief that Nationals is not the only leadership event that is worthwhile of funding, rather that money saved from spending on the few that go to Nationals could be spent on paying the entire chapter's registration fee for a much closer leadership event. Thus hopefully allowing more members to gain leadership experience.

*Xpressions was turned into [http://iotaphixpressions.tumblr.com/ a blog] this term.
*Due to unwieldy pledge class sizes in previous terms, a maximum capacity of 110 pledges was placed on this term. In previous terms, there was no limit. The 110 cap was an attempt to better-accommodate the pledges and actives, since chapter events and programs were getting hard to manage. e.g. Most [[Pledge Retreat]] locations did not have enough camp sites. The cap was placed on a "first come, first serve" basis. The first 110 students were given a corresponding number to let them know that they were within the cap.

== Program Changes ==
* Pledge Parents, through the advice of President [[Jhonatan Paredes]], implemented a Strikes Policy modeled after [[Chi|Chi Chapter's]] policy. Under this system, a total of four strikes for any number of misdemeanors listed in pledge-signed contract resulted in that pledge DPing. Pledges received strikes for infractions like skipping meetings, and fractions of strikes for smaller infractions like not wearing their pledge pins. Strikes are not removable, and wildcards do not make up for them. However, pledges still had to use wildcards to make up some missed requirements like quizzes.
* Pledge Secretaries created a pledge newsletter called "Plexpressions" to keep pledges informed about important pledge-related information.
* Pledge Parents implemented a pledge website modeled after [[Chi|Chi Chapter's]] pledge website to allow pledges to keep track of their requirements and other important information such as the number of strikes accumulated.
* [[Ashish Bhatt]] and [[Derek Lee]] wrote significant amendments to the Chapter By-Laws to update them to reflect current practices.
** The Publicity Committee and Communications Committee were merged to exist under the Super Secretary Committee
** Membership VPs are now required to host at minimum one leadership event per term (e.g. ALW, CLW, a LEADS workshop)
** Created a Risk Management Committee to deal with potential risk management infractions. This committee supplements the Advisory Committee so pledges and actives can speak to people they may see more often and feel more comfortable communicating with.
** Created an official Long-Term Strategic Planning Committee chaired by the president to address issues that may span multiple terms, such as bids to host conferences, goals for the [[Leadership Development Fund]], and more.

==Background==

*Princess Line was the name given to Wei-wen's line during a bbq held for actives who helped out at Luong Class pledge retreat and their sponsorees. Wei-wen complained about eating barbecued chicken without a fork. Later that night, the actives there realized he would take a bite from the chicken using his fork and then wipe his face with a napkin.

*Later that night the story was told of the March 20, 2010 trip to Sykes Hot Springs in Big Sur, California, in which Wei-Wen went backpacking for 20 miles on an overnight trip with [[Dinh Luong]], [[Jeffrey Kwong]] and [[Derek Lee]]. Derek Lee and Alex Kwong carried huge backpacking packs full of camping gear to the campsite, and on the way back out, Wei-Wen attempted to carry Derek's backpack back out. He succeeded for 1 mile and then complained his back was too sore, Derek carried it the rest of the 9 miles.

*While midnight packing for Luong Class pledge retreat, Wei-wen (who had always said he wanted to help out with this) complained that it was too hard and that he hadn't expected it to last this long.

*During Luong Class pledge retreat, when asked to wake up early to start cooking, exclaimed it was too early and wanted to sleep in.

And thus this is how Princess Line was formed............

* I don't give you enough credit Fourth for doing what you do. Like pledge retreat and staying up and packing and helping out whenever, and yeah I did let you sleep in, but that's because I felt sorry for keeping you awake for the week, making you pack and what not.

==Official Duties==

The Finance VPs' official duties are the following:

#To serve as [[chairperson]] of the finance committee.
#To receive and deposit all general chapter funds in a timely manner and to keep an accurate record thereof.
#To make, under proper chapter budget approval, payments from chapter accounts by check.(Checks must be counter-signed by either the co-Finance Vice President or another active member and a receipt for all services/materials purchases must be obtained.)
#To be diligent in the collection of membership dues (defined as all dues related to the chapter).
#To keep an accurate written record of payments and receipts of all moneys (in the form of a written journal or ledger) and to supply a written receipt when asked.
#To see that all National fees are transmitted within ten days of collection to the National Office by the membership vice president.
#To see that the chapter budget is prepared and approved by the third chapter meeting of the year.

'''Sneak''' was a quest and party thrown by the [[Pledges]] for the [[Actives]]. Those actively participating in Sneak were to be divided up into three groups; those hunting for the clues and the final location, those who have been "kidnapped" and held hostage at the end location, and finally those who did not wish to participate in the clue hunt who would have been taken to the final location and party. Pledges left clues for the actives to find that gave hints to both the next clue location and the final party location. There were three purposes to having Sneak:

#To have fun
#To teach the pledge class to work together and gain valuable organizational leadership skills
#To promote friendship and brotherhood

During [[Krenek Class|Krenek Term]] (F2K8), Sneak Chair [[Ashish Bhatt]] and previous Sneak Chair [[Derek Lee]] modified the rules for safety reasons, notably banning the use of weapons. People were very reckless in previous terms, as there were instances of driving cars with hands zip-tied and of some [[Derek Lee|people]] unintentionally getting cut by boxcutters. Sneak should follow [[risk management]] policy. However, some people are still dangerous customers, and not a good idea to mess with during this event (see [[Carmen Chu]]).

==Snake==
As of [[Luong Class|Spring 2010]], Sneak has been removed as a pledging requirement in accordance with a request by UC Davis Student Housing. The activity was perceived to have high potential for hazing, and was thus replaced with '''Snake'''. Snake, for the most part, has the same goals and rules as Sneak but with the primary omission of the "kidnapping" aspect. Instead, pledges have to put two stickers onto the forehead of an active in order for the active to lose the game. Once the active loses, he or she is then invited to the end location.

The '''The Benevolent and Spirited Order of Oil and Sand''', aka the '''BASOOS''', is an award that was created after a harrowing trip to a national convention during which the bus broke down in the middle of nowhere/desert. The brothers going banded together and still made it to the convention despite their travelling woes. Thus the BASOOS was created and given to people in the chapter who have shown excellent spirit and passion for the chapter. It is an award that is passed from one recipient to the next when the holder feels someone is deserving (usually when someone goes above and beyond their call of duty as an officer or as an active).

==History and Tradition==

In December 1982 , several Iota Phi brothers left Davis in the Boy Scout Troup 66 bus headed toward the 1982 National Convention in Kansas City, MO. Along the way, they planned to pick up several other brothers. The group got into the Tehachapi Mountains when the bus blew an oil line and was stranded. Several brothers turned around and went back home. However, several other brothers found any means possible to complete the pilgrimage to the Mecca of Alpha Phi Omega, Kansas City, as the National Office was located there in 1982 (in the old Waltower Building).

In 1983, Earle Herbert, the National Vice President at the time and later National President, bestowed upon those brothers who drove, flew, or bussed their way to the National Convention, that Iota Phi since has passed down through all generations since: The Benevolent and Spirited Order of Oil and Sand (BASOOS). The significance of the oil and sand should be self explanatory--busted oil line in the middle of a desert. After the National Convention, the chapter decided to pass the BASOOS down to an active brother who has exhibited a spirited and positive attitude throughout the term. The BASOOS used to be handed down at each chapter banquet, at least through the early 1990s. In more recent times, it has been passed down only when a holder felt that a Brother was deserving.

Prior to handing it down the current holder of the BASOOS (which has been a blue ribbon sash with a golden-yellow stripe down the center) cuts a small piece of the sash to keep as his/her momento for receiving the award. In the past, the BASOOS was cut into V-shape piece. More recently, it is cut into a straight piece. Traditionally, a piece of the BASOOS bears a Key Pin.

Dave Emery, one of the original BASOOS recipients, had designed a BASOOS crest. The crest features an oil lamp that represents the oil leaking from the red Boy Scout bus the original recipients had started the trip to the National Convention on. The vehicles in the band are the aforementioned red bus, Dave's yellow car, and a plane--the ways these members started or got to the convention. The heart represents Kansas City, the heartland of the U.S. and location of the 1982 National Convention. The bird is fraternity's golden eagle. The meaning of the grapes and lightning bolt are unknown.

== Program Changes ==
* Pledge Parents implemented a Strikes Policy modeled after [[Chi|Chi Chapter's]] policy. Under this system, a total of four strikes for any number of misdemeanors listed in pledge-signed contract resulted in that pledge DPing. Pledges received strikes for infractions like skipping meetings, and fractions of strikes for smaller infractions like not wearing their pledge pins. Strikes are not removable, and wildcards do not make up for them. However, pledges still had to use wildcards to make up some missed requirements like quizzes.
* Pledge Secretaries created a pledge newsletter called "Plexpressions" to keep pledges informed about important pledge-related information.
* Pledge Parents implemented a pledge website modeled after [[Chi|Chi Chapter's]] pledge website to allow pledges to keep track of their requirements and other important information such as the number of strikes accumulated.
* [[Ashish Bhatt]] and [[Derek Ng]] wrote significant amendments to the Chapter By-Laws to update them to reflect current practices.
** The Publicity Committee and Communications Committee were merged to exist under the Super Secretary Committee
** Membership VPs are now required to host at minimum one leadership event per term (e.g. ALW, CLW, a LEADS workshop)
** Created a Risk Management Committee to deal with potential risk management infractions. This committee supplements the Advisory Committee so pledges and actives can speak to people they may see more often and feel more comfortable communicating with.
** Created an official Long-Term Strategic Planning Committee chaired by the president to address issues that may span multiple terms, such as bids to host conferences, goals for the [[Leadership Development Fund]], and more.

Risk Management Committee

Risk Management Committee was created during [[McKenzie Class|McKenzie Term]], Fall 2009. It was written into a series of updates to the bylaws by [[Derek Lee]]. The committee was meant to investigate all risk management infractions and offer recommendations to the chapter as to what would be the best course of action. The Risk Management Committee is chaired by the [[Sergeants-At-Arms]]. It is composed of the [[Sergeants-At-Arms]], three brothers who have active status (one chosen each by the [[President]], the [[Service Vice Presidents]], and the [[Membership Vice Presidents]]), and three [[advisors]]. In practice, the first ever Risk Management Committee drafted a Chapter Risk Management Policy to extend national policy to include other things that the chapter feels would be a matter of risk management.

An understanding of Robert's Rules and fraternity documents should be emphasized for members of Risk Management Committee. After the first active RMComm, [[Ashish Bhatt]] and [[Jhonatan Paredes]] recommended that it would be wise to have at least one of the appointed members of the committee be a newer active so that they could become better-versed in the rules and policies and be able to pass the knowledge along.

==Duties==
*Enforce all risk management rules
*Investigate all potential infractions of risk management rules
*Advise the chapter as to all matters pertaining to risk management and abiding by SPAC policy

==In Practice==
Risk Management Committee should:
*Seek methods of effectively educating the chapter about what is and is not against risk management.
*Take preventative measures to avoid risk management violations
**e.g. Talking to officers before certain events, recommending amendments to chapter documents, taking in questions in person or using the online forum
*Address risk management infractions by finding out the full story from all involved parties and seeing if an actual violation has occurred by reviewing documents.
*Write an end-of-term Risk Management Report stating any risk management concerns about the term. This report should be given to the following term's [[Executive Committee]] to prevent issues in the future.

==Background==

*Princess Line was the name given to Wei-wen's line during a bbq held for actives who helped out at Luong Class pledge retreat and their sponsorees. Wei-wen complained about eating barbecued chicken without a fork. Later that night, the actives there realized he would take a bite from the chicken using his fork and then wipe his face with a napkin.

*Later that night the story was told of the March 20, 2010 trip to Sykes Hot Springs in Big Sur, California, in which Wei-Wen went backpacking for 20 miles on an overnight trip with [[Dinh Luong]], [[Jeffrey Kwong]] and [[Derek Lee]]. Derek Ng and Alex Kwong carried huge backpacking packs full of camping gear to the campsite, and on the way back out, Wei-Wen attempted to carry Derek's backpack back out. He succeeded for 1 mile and then complained his back was too sore, Derek carried it the rest of the 9 miles.

*While midnight packing for Luong Class pledge retreat, Wei-wen (who had always said he wanted to help out with this) complained that it was too hard and that he hadn't expected it to last this long.

*During Luong Class pledge retreat, when asked to wake up early to start cooking, exclaimed it was too early and wanted to sleep in.

And thus this is how Princess Line was formed............
